Traditional Chinese Society Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Traditional Chinese Society - Essay Example Mencius and Confucius are the major characters supporting the lowering of women dignity in terms of social positions. The Ming dynasty of traditional Chinese, was considered different in the way they exercised power. Sima Qian one of the great grand historian, explains how patterns of dynastities were practiced in the past. He was given the responsibility of compiling document of the Chinese heroes by his father before he passed away. Brook (37) suggests that in the Late Ming Courtesan, there three policies brought out periodically by different characters, they included the transmission, transaction and the transfiguration. Transmission policy took about the portrayal of courtesans, in a particular historical mode mediating itself in distinctive contexts and genres. In this policy, Hongyu Huang explains how Wu Weiye tries to allegories a courtesanââ¬â¢s disaster in the invigorated poetry as history convention. This was in turn accepted by eighteenth century imaginary tale and late Qing opinionated poetry. Wu Weiye himself was groundbreaking stature in Chinese writing establishing in office, a new poetic style called Meicun ti. The sequence of Wuââ¬â¢s long tale that contain the seven syllabic lines, expresses the Ming Qing family upheaval with the stress on peopleââ¬â¢s predicaments in the face of countrywide and personal crises. The Wuââ¬â¢s famous rhyme ââ¬Å"Ballad of Yuanyuan,â⬠customarily customary construes the better cynicism against the whole turncoat Wu Sangui and compassion for unplanned femme fatale. Transaction policy involves economic exchange to the distribution of cultural capital, gawk and body sandwiched between patrons and courtesans. Lawrence Yim reviews Qianyiââ¬â¢s poet, which involves how Qian Qianyi and Liu Rushi that made a very nice corpus called exchange poem, at the commencing of their relationship in the late Ming. The poetry becomes a fascinating object in collection of the Ming ââ¬âQings customary and lite rary memories. Its purpose is not to go over the Qian-liu legend, but to probe the intriguing parts of femaleââ¬â¢s body in their replaced poems (Mungello 46-47). Transfiguration policy tends to undercut the circuitousness of desire and the descriptions of history, by suggesting radical subjectivity characteristic to woman or the complexity of the subjectivity itself. In this policy, Ling Hon Lam studies an obscure called untalented where she defies her biographersââ¬â¢ narrative finality with the Mingââ¬â¢s downfall. The late Ming courtesans went through gender boundaries by skillful self- performance as poets, loyalists and knights-errant. Paradoxically, this suggested an aura tic image of a male subject integral rather than challenged, but was capable of holding onto despite the globe around him falling apart. This obstruct also discusses an obscure courtesan called Xu Feng and a chuanqi opera with a title called Xinghua Shan, is attributed to her. She gets married to a quiet family of Changshu and she is seen performing like lampoon of liu due to her incompetence in poetry and over behaving amidst her patrons. We find that the two biographies composed by Qianââ¬â¢s associates, describe the mysterious execute of Xu Feng with her ferocious apparition correspond with the submission of Nanjing. In traditional Chinese society, women were greatly oppressed due to the fact that men were seen as the central part of the family. For instance, the forerunner to whom a Zhou or a Shang family king made

What are the main factors contributing to low expectancy in the Essay - 1
What are the main factors contributing to low expectancy in the developing world Investigate possible solutions to these problems - Essay Example re (2011), ââ¬Å"life expectancy is an indicator of how long a person can expect to live on average given prevailing mortality rates.â⬠Different countries have different life expectancy rates because of differences in prevailing mortality factors. Existing research shows that there is generally low expectancy in developing countries as compared to developed world (Dalkhat, 2007). In this essay, the various factors that accounts for the low expectancy in developing world are critically analysed. The table above gives a very glaring proof of the fact that poverty is a factor that accounts for low expectancy in developing countries. This is because all least scoring countries on the expectancy have very low low per capita income as compared to the first ten highest scoring countries. Poverty leads to malnutrition, ill-health and other life threatening health and social issues that affect the chances of people living for long. Highly related to the first factor, poverty causes most developing countries not to have very comprehensive and well managed healthcare system in place. Undeniably, quality healthcare is responsible for improved and increased quality healthcare of the citizenry. The Insurance Risk Guide (2009) outlines three major components of quality healthcare system. These include ââ¬Å"adequate scientiï ¬ c knowledge for supporting high quality health careâ⬠(Insurance Risk Guide, 2009). This point trumpets the need for comprehensive scientific research into finding new and most workable discoveries that need to be put in place in the health sector. Without any doubt, this cannot be done in the absence of personnel, financing sourcing and scientific techniques. Sadly, these cannot be done in the midst of poverty. The second component is adequate access to Health Care. In developing countries, it is sad to note that access to healthcare is only available to the privileged few. The final component is Medical Persons and Medical Institutions. The meaning of this

Global Perspective on Health Policy Essay Example for Free
Global Perspective on Health Policy Essay Introduction A macro perspective on health policy issues can be helpful to identify how problems become policy issues and how these issues result in the creation of health care policy. The neglected epidemic of Chronic Disease also known as non- communicable diseases are a controversial issue that needs to be addressed in the world. In this paper, the writer will provide an explanation of how this issue has resulted from a policyââ¬â¢s creation. Identify the steps in the state and federal policy development process. Furthermore, differentiate between policy development and implementation. Also, explain how stakeholders become involved in the process and why their voices often become a driver for change in health policy. What is Chronic Disease? Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases are not transferred from person to person. They are slowly progressed over time. The four main kinds of non-communicable diseases are cardiovascular diseases such as strokes or heart attacks, any type cancer, chronic respiratory diseases like chronic obstructed pulmonary disease and diabetes. Other Chronic Diseases that affect many Americans are, Obesity and Overweight, Asthma, Epilepsy, Food Allergies, Glaucoma, Alzheimerââ¬â¢s, and Heart Disease (Non-communicable diseases. 2014). A Chronic Disease is a long-term illness that can be controlled, but not healed. The worldwide population is affected by chronic diseases. In the United States, chronic disease is the leading cause of disability and death that accounts for 70% of all deaths. Out of these premature deaths, 90% effect low- income and middle-class population. The World Health Organization shows that chronic illnesses are also the main reason for untimely deaths everywhere, even in places where communicable ailments are widespread (What is Chronic Disease?. 2011). According to the article, chronic disease is the most preventable and can be successfully controlled, and they are also very costly health issues and the most common. With the proper care and treatment, these long-term diseases can be controlled (What is Chronic Disease?. 2011). The Epidemic of Chronic Disease In todayââ¬â¢s society, Chronic Disease is responsible for an enormous percentage of diseases in people. Non-communicable diseases affect all regions of theà world and age groups. People before the age of 60 attribute to 9 million of the deaths associated with chronic disease. Even though Chronic Disease are a huge problem in low-income areas, these diseases and risk are not exclusive to more wealthy Americans (Horton, R. 2005). The most vulnerable to the risk factors that contribute to chronic diseases are adults, elderly and children. Studies prove that it comes from unhealthy diets, exposure and use of tobacco products, not regularly exercising and harmfully using alcohol. Non-communicable disease are driven by aging and the globalization of unhealthiness in our lives (Non-communicable diseases. 2014). The globalization of unhealthiness like eating unhealthy can result in high blood pressure, overweight and obesity, high blood glucose levels, and higher blood lipids. Many of these risk factors can be lead to cardiovascular disease, which is a common NCD (Non-communicable diseases. 2014). The Center for Managing Chronic Disease (CMCD) aims help in the effectiveness with management and prevention in chronic disease. The main goal of CMCD is to help people at risk, or that are most vulnerable. Conducting advanced research and publicizing the results to aid in policy change and practices (What is Chronic Disease? 2011). On September 2011, a meeting with the UN High Level on Non-Communicable Diseases was an exceptional chance to produce a sustained global drive contrary to preventable disease and disability, premature death for chronic diseases, like stroke, cancer, heart disease and respiratory disease and diabetes. This is an increasing global threat in NCDs that is a barrier to developmental goals. These development goals include health equity, poverty reduction, human security and economic stability (The Lancet. 2011). Policy Making Process. In healthcare, Chronic Disease epidemics cause many threats to the world. In response to the crisis, The Lancet NCD Action Group and the NCD Alliance has proposed five priority actions. Which are: ââ¬Å"Leadership, prevention, treatment, international cooperation, and monitoring and accountabilityââ¬âand the delivery of five priority interventionsââ¬âtobacco control, salt reduction, improved diets and physical activity, reduction in hazardous alcohol intake, and essential drugs and technologies (The Lancet. 2011).â⬠The import involvements were chosen for their health paraphernalia, cost-value, small costs of implementation, and political and financial achievability. Tobacco controlà is the most urgent and immediate priority. They have propose a goal for 2040 that in essence the world would be free from tobacco where fewer than 5% of people engaged in tobacco use (The Lancet. 2011). Policy problems are identified by many factors that include methods that include getting issues on the political agendas and removing them. The first step in the Policymaking Process is agenda setting. Agenda setting is all about decision-making in the first phase of the policymaking process. To be considered on the agenda, difficulties must arise to policymakersââ¬â¢ attention. Healthcare problems are highly visible, because the affect the nation, whereas major problems no relating to health are considered invisible to make the agenda (The Lancet. 2011). The Policymaking process discusses the precise decisions and procedures that are required for a policy to be considered, proposed and implemented. This process is an interactive progression with various points of access that provides opportunities to impact the many decisions (Politics and the Policymaking Process. n.d.).Policymaking process is an interactive process with several points of entree that provides chances to influence the decision-making processes involved in each of the stages. Furthermore, there are three phases of policymaking: the implementation phase, the formulation phase, and formulation phase (Politics and the Policymaking Process. n.d.). Policy development and implementation. During Policy Development, policies may be developed and applied at several stages and may vary from formal reg ulations and legislation to the informal procedures by which governments function (Policy Development. n.d.). An example of policy development would be in government policy that is related to youth, children and health developed at national and federal; territorial and provincial; community, local and district; or international levels by elected executives transversely with a quantity sectors that includes education, health, social services, finance, recreation and labor. Additionally, policy development time frame is determined by various factors that include government agendas and media attention. (Policy Development. n.d.). On the contrary, Policy implementation involves putting implemented policies into play. Success from implementation is depends on three essential elements. First element is the state or president and government officials locally, must pass down polices to the proper agency with the government bureaucracy (Policy Implementationà Boundless Open Textbook. n.d.). The second element that is essential to policy implementation is strong interpretation. Meaning that legislative intent need be deciphered into functioning guidelines and agendas. The concluding element necessary in operative policy implementation is also challenging to achieve. Dedication of assets to implement policy beneath the primarily element must be combined with organization of the policy with enduring processes (Policy Implementation Boundless Open Textbook. n.d.). Stakeholders in Healthcare. A Stakeholder involvement in planning, management policymaking has be brought on by new general development models. These models seek a different role for each state based on consensus, pluralistic structures and political legitimacy. Stakeholder contribution can be categorized into three forms: cooperative, instructive and consultative (Involving Stakeholders in Aquaculture Policy-making, Planning and Management. n.d.). In Cooperative involvement primary stakeholder act as companions with government in the decision processing. Consultative involvement is where government makes the primary decisions and stakeholders still have influence in the outcome and processes. Last, in Instructive involvement the government makes the choices but apparatuses occur during information interchange (Involving Stakeholders in Aquaculture Policy-making, Planning and Management. n.d.). Conclusion. The macro perspective on health policy issues can be helpful to identify how problems become policy issues and how these issues result in the creation of health care policy. Chronic diseases impact the healthcare industry in many ways. This controversial issue impacts all age groups. The Center for Managing Chronic Disease (CMCD) helps with management and prevention in chronic disease. This paper, provided an explanation of how the epidemic of Chronic Disease has resulted from a policyââ¬â¢s creation. Moreover, identified the steps in the policy development process. Furthermore, differentiated between policy development and implementation. Also, explained how stakeholders become involved in the process and why their voices often become a driver for change in health policy. References What is Chronic Disease?. (2011). Prohibition Essay example -- essays research papers
Prohibition, A Complete Failure à à à à à Prohibition had become an issue long before its eventual induction as the 18th amendment in 1920. Organizations came about for the sole purpose of an alcohol free America. In 1833, an estimated one million Americans belonged to some type of temperance association (Behr 12). Many believed the absence of alcohol would help the poor as well as big business. Lower class people would put more money into savings accounts and productivity would increase among workers (Hanson 27). More importantly the ââ¬Å"noble experimentâ⬠ââ¬âwas undertaken to reduce crime and corruption, solve social problems, and improve the health and hygiene in Americaâ⬠(Thorton 1). Although gangsters of the 1920ââ¬â¢s were notorious for their violent turf wars,ââ¬Å"the fundamental problem with prohibition was that an increasing percentage of American citizens refused to uphold the lawâ⬠(Hanson 40). Not only did crime increase, ironically, prohibition turned ordinary citizens into lawbreakers. ââ¬Å"In San Francisco, a jury trying a prohibition case was found drinking up the liquor that had been used in court as evidenceâ⬠(Edey 154). In Texas, shortly after the start of prohibition,â⬠a still turning out 130 gallons of whiskey a day was found operating on the farm of Senator Morris Shepard, author of the 18th Amendmentâ⬠(Edey 154). ââ¬Å"Americans bought machines for distilling liquor, called stills, at the hardware store.â⬠(Hanson 28). Even if they did not know how to use them they easily get the information from the public library (Hanson28). Everything you could imagine was put into use to make liquor, even bathtubs (Hanson 28). ââ¬Å"In fact, bathtub gin became a common term to describe during the decadeâ⬠(Hanson28). ââ¬Å"Doctors and druggists were legally allowed to dispense alcohol as medicineâ⬠(Hanson 34). ââ¬Å"An average of 10 million prescriptions were issued each year during the thirteen years prohibition was in effectâ⬠(Hanson 34). In summary, ordinary citizens were consuming alcohol, an illegal act. They were making alcoholic beverages. They were getting doctors to prescribe alcohol for them under questionable circumstances making the medical profession their accomplice. Somebody had to satisfy the need for alcohol to an eager nation. This is where the rise in organized crime came in. ââ¬Å"For the first time the United States experienced a massive ... ...e or prohibition agents zeroed-in on breweries, Capone was forewarned and hastily converted the targeted facilities to production of near-beer (Heimel 38). As one example of the amount of money changing hands, consider George Remus. He was one of the most profitable, if not the most profitable, bootlegger of the 1920ââ¬â¢s. Out of the estimated $40,000,000 a year that he made, half of it went for bribes and payoffs (Behr 104). Prohibition has been called the ââ¬Å"noble experimentâ⬠that failed (Hanson 26, 27). One of the reasons behind its monumental failure is that it made criminals of ordinary citizens. Decent, hardworking people broke the law simply because they took a drink of alcohol. And what a drink they took, consumption went from .8 to 1.3 gallons per capita between 1919 and 1929 (Thornton 2). To support this heavy demand for booze criminal gangs became more organized and ruthless, protected by corrupt officials. Corruption dramatically increased in prohibition. And who were people that were corrupted? Ordinary citizens were corrupted, who before prohibition, were decent, law abiding individuals. à à à à à à à à à Ã
Makioka Sisters & Pedro Paramo :: Free Essay Writer
Makioka Sisters & Pedro Paramo Though the two books, The Makioka Sisters and Pedro Paramo appear to be a part of two entirely separate worlds, some connections can be seen throughout the works. Junichiro Tanizaki uses The Makioka Sisters to tell the tale of four beautiful sisters whoââ¬â¢s lives are encompassed by a world of tradition and propriety. While at the same time Juan Rulfoââ¬â¢s Pedro Paramo is exploring these same ideas of obligation and in the best term, formalities. This is the key to these two works, formalities. Each culture and time is experiencing pressures and obligations due to the charactersââ¬â¢ belief in observing formalities and traditions. Both books open to a dilemma that plagues the characters and can be tied back to the observation of formalities. The Makioka family is desperately seeking a husband for the third sister, Yukiko. Sachiko explains ââ¬Å"Inâ⬠¦hopes of finding Yukiko a worthy husband, they had refused the proposals that in earlier years had showered upon them. Not one seemed quite what they wantedâ⬠(9). This prestigious Osaka family presumes that they must adhere to every formality to its highest degree in order to uphold their reputation and honor. A suitor has yet to meet what they believe must be their standards. The head of the family, Tatsuo has been displeased with the men that have sought Yukikoââ¬â¢s hand, he believes that the ââ¬Å"old and once-important familyâ⬠cannot afford to take in a man who might humble or disgrace ââ¬Å"the dignity of the Makioka nameâ⬠(8). The family is weaving itself into a web of pain and humiliation through their insistence to comply with t he precedence of exalting and sheltering the Makioka name at any cost, even that of love and happiness. Juan Preciado is also being thrust into a dilemma when he makes attempts to follow through with empty civilities. Rulfo opens this story with Preciado traveling to the small, desolate village of Comala. After the death of Preciadoââ¬â¢s mother, he decides to uphold the promise he made to her by visiting his estranged father, Pedro Paramo, whom he never knew. Preciado admits, ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t intend to keep my promise. But then I began to think about what she told me, until I couldnââ¬â¢t stop thinking and even dreaming about it, and building a whole world around that Pedro Paramo. Thatââ¬â¢s why I came to Comalaâ⬠(1). Preciado is brought to this insufferable village because of an empty promise that he made to his dying mother.
